Nearly fifty years ago, I practiced Japanese Fencing (Kendo). As a special personal favor, my instuctor gave me these very old (even at the time!) and beaten-up hand and head protection items. As I soon found out, they were worn and beaten soft and flimsy and gave very little protection to the hard blows from bamboo fencing swords. So ... I somehow rounded up heavy leather, cut it to fit the areas where my bruises were most colorful ... and ... set down to do some serious hand sewing. I wore these items for weekly practive for the next year or so ... and ... as you can see ... have lived to tell the tale.
